At the grocery store check stand, a Sunset cooking magazine caught my eye. Titled The Best of Sunset Cookbook it showcases the top 101 recipes from Sunset magazine’s new cookbook. The photo of the Spicy Mango Shrimp on the cover looked divine. I had to have it.
I bought a copy and came home to flip through the recipe pages. Everything looked good. I thought to myself, “I’d like to make every recipe in this magazine.” Then it hit me. I could do a take on Julie & Julia, the story of Julie Powell who blogged her way through Julia Child’s Mastering The Art of French Cooking. On her blog, Julie quotes her grandmother’s favorite saying, “When you’re old, crazy and worn-out, you’re old, crazy and worn-out.” Well I am old, crazy and worn out so my project will be on a much less challenging scale. I shall take the next year and blog my way through The Best of Sunset Cookbook.
Here are my self imposed restrictions. The magazine purports to have the Top 101 recipes but I count 102. There are four cocktail recipes which I will be skipping as we are tee-totalers. That puts the recipe count at 98. There are two I will make, but won’t be tasting as I don’t eat lamb or duck. I’ll have to rely on my husband’s opinion of these two recipes. There are 52 weeks in a year, so I will need to cook at least two recipes a week to finish the project by February 25, 2012. I will start tomorrow, cooking, eating, and commenting on the recipes as I go. This should be fun! Click here for the recipes.
